BHP Billiton - GEMCO
Removal of phase separated diesel from the groundwater.

BHP Billiton GEMCO operates a manganese mine in the Northern Territory on Groote Eylandt. In response to an 8 million litre diesel release adjacent to the marine environment, personnel at S&G were engaged to undertake a detailed hydrogeological understanding of the impacted area and initiate the removal of phase separated diesel from the groundwater.

To date, approximately 1.8 million litres of diesel fuel has been recovered from the groundwater. S&G is involved in the on going project management and direction of the assessment and remediation program, and is progressing the development of a long term Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) proposal for the site.

S&G is currently working with CSIRO Land and Water to develop enhanced attenuation of the diesel plume as well as working with an Adelaide University PhD student on the discharge mechanisms for groundwater into a tidal impacted marine environment. .
